Flonase Information
Flonase is a nasal inhaler with the generic name of Fluticasone. Flonase is included in the drug category called Nasal Corticosteroids. Flonase acts like cortisone medicines and is a steroid that is inhaled.Before using Flonase, tell your doctor if you have glaucoma or cataracts, liver disease, diabetes, herpes simplex virus of your eyes, tuberculosis or any other infection, sores or ulcers inside your nose, or if you have recently had injury of or surgery on your nose.
It may take up to several days of using Flonase nasal spray before your symptoms improve. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a week of treatment.Throw the medication away after you have used 120 sprays, even if there is still medicine left in the bottle.
Do not administer Flonase to a child younger than 4 years old without medical advice. Corticosteroid medication can affect growth in children. Talk with your doctor if you think your child is not growing at a normal rate while using Flonase.
Flonase Indications
Flonase nasal spray is prescribed for the relief of stuffy noses, nose irritation, nose discomfort and other nasal problems. Flonase is also used to prevent Nasal Polyps from returning after they are surgically removed.
Flonase Warnings
The study of Flonase and its effects on pregnancy have not yielded any definite results as of yet. If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, discuss the risks with your doctor before using Flonase.

Flonase Usage Guidelines
Flonase is a nasal medicine and it should not be orally administered or injected in any way.
Before using this medicine, clean your nose and once it is free from dirt, insert the nosepiece into your nostril. Aim and spray the liquid towards the inner corner of the nose.
Do not use more of the nasal spray than directed by your doctor.
Flonase Dosage
The dosage of Flonase in adults is one to two sprays in each nostril once or twice daily.Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Before using the spray for the first time, you must prime the spray pump. Shake the medicine well and spray 6 test sprays into the air and away from your face. Prime the spray pump any time you have not used your nasal spray for longer than 30 days, or if you have left the cap off for 5 days or longer. Spray until a fine mist appears.
Flonase Overdose
The symptoms of Flonase overdose include:
- Acne
- Blurred vision
- Bone fractures
- Excess hair growth
- Increase in urination
- Thirst
- Menstrual changes
- Lack of menstruation
- Muscle wasting
- Weakness
- Rounding of face
- High blood pressure
- Impotence in males
If you suspect an overdose and the above symptoms are present immediately consult your doctor or seek emergency medical attention.
Flonase Missed Dose
When you happen to miss a dose of Flonase, it is ok to take one after an hour or so but if an hour has already passed, just skip the missed dose and proceed with the next one.
Flonase Side Effects
Some of the side effects of Flonase nasal spray include:
- Bad smell
- Blindness
- Nosebleeds
- Burning or stinging of nose
- Red discharge on eyes and nose
- Muscle pains
- Skin rashes
- Stomach pains
- Watery eyes
- Troubled breathing
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- White patches in the throat
- Wheezing
- Excess hair growth
- Sneezing
- Itching

Side Effects
Nasal dryness/irritation, nausea, or vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
If your doctor has directed you to use this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: eye pain, facial pain, signs of nasal damage (such as pain, severe nosebleeds, a constant whistling sound from your nose), white patches in your nose/back of your throat, pain when swallowing, persistent sore throat.
- severe or ongoing nosebleeds;
- noisy breathing, runny nose, or crusting around your nostrils;
- redness, sores, or white patches in your mouth or throat;
- fever, chills, weakness, nausea, vomiting, flu symptoms;
- any wound that will not heal; or
- blurred vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights.
Less serious side effects may include:
- headache, back pain;
- minor nosebleed;
- menstrual problems, loss of interest in sex;
- sinus pain, cough, sore throat; or
- sores or white patches inside or around your nose.
Flonase Drug Reactions
It is always wise to inform your doctor of the medicines you are currently taking. You should inform your doctor if you have been or are currently taking Ephedrine, Phenobarbital or Rifampin.
