PREMARIN (conjugated estrogens tablets, USP)

Important Information Of Premarin

Premarin is a member of the Conjugated Estrogens group of drugs, based on the female sex hormone estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone essential to the female physiology, on which many of the female-specific body function are based. Among the disorders that may occur when the estrogen quantity becomes insufficient, some examples are: menopause, infertility, and some Breast Cancer types, and ovary function deficiencies, degeneration of the vagina or urethra. The male human body also needs estrogen to function properly, insufficient quantities of this hormone leading to prostate cancer.

If you are using or are considering using PREMARIN only to treat vaginal symptoms, consider topical therapies first. If you are using or are considering using PREMARIN only to prevent osteoporosis due to menopause, talk with your healthcare provider about whether a different treatment or medicine without estrogens might be better for you. PREMARIN should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration consistent with your treatment goals and risks.

Premarin Indications

Premarin is mainly prescribed for the treatment of such disorders as:
  • moderate or severe vasomotor symptoms associated with the menopause
  • moderate or severe symptoms of vaginal or vulvar atrophy associated with the menopause
  • hypoestrogenism due to hypogonadism, castration or primary ovarian failure
  • some types of Breast Cancer
  • advanced androgen-dependent carcinoma of the prostate
  • prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis – in carefully selected cases.

There are a number of other cases in which Premarin can be prescribed, so if you want to know more about why you have been prescribed this drug, consult your personal health care specialist.

Premarin Uses

This medication is a female hormone. It is used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness). These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen. If you are using this medication to treat symptoms only in and around the vagina, products applied directly inside the vagina should be considered before medications that are taken by mouth, absorbed through the skin, or injected.
Certain estrogen products may also be used by women after menopause to prevent bone loss (osteoporosis). However, there are other medications (such as raloxifene, bisphosphonates including alendronate) that are also effective in preventing bone loss and may be safer. These medications should be considered for use before estrogen treatment.
Certain estrogen products may also be used by men and women to treat cancers (certain types of prostate cancer, breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body) and by women who are not able to produce enough estrogen (for example, due to hypogonadism, primary ovarian failure).
